{"id":1586,"date":"2022-05-25T02:31:00","date_gmt":"2022-05-25T07:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mgocpa.com\/?post_type=perspective&#038;p=1586"},"modified":"2025-07-03T15:48:05","modified_gmt":"2025-07-03T20:48:05","slug":"understanding-new-employer-reporting-requirements-for-new-york-state","status":"publish","type":"perspective","link":"https:\/\/www.mgocpa.com\/perspective\/understanding-new-employer-reporting-requirements-for-new-york-state\/","title":{"rendered":"New York State Updates Employer Reporting Requirements"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As of January 1, 2022, New York employers must report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tax.ny.gov\/bus\/wt\/newhire.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new hires<\/a> who are listed as independent contractors and have contracts worth more than $2,500 to the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Previously, you were not mandated to include independent contractors under the state\u2019s new hire reporting requirement; now you\u2019ll have to add them to the list of other new hires or rehires to report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your organization falls into one of the following categories, you\u2019re required to report your new hires for tax purposes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Labor organizations, including union-operated placement offices (I.e., hiring halls),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Employers of individuals performing domestic services,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Government entities excluding federal agencies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Your organization will have to report those new hires or rehires, including independent contractors, within 20 calendar days from the date hired.
